8 Plait Overlay - Plaiting

Step 14: As was done with the 6-plait belly, bind the 8 strands together behind the handle end using waxed thread. Clamp these loose ends (behind the handle end) down in a vise. Apply leather dressing or plaiting soap to the strands. This will result in a tighter plait. Remember, "Pull tight, plait loose"! For the first 8" of the handle, a simple checkerboard pattern was used following an under 1, over 1 plaiting sequence. After 8" had been plaited, I went straight into an under 2, over 2 pattern. Periodically apply leather dressing to keep the strands supple.

I'm currently still plaiting the thong but am getting close to the end of the bolster underneath. At this point the whip has not been rolled and no strands have been dropped.

After plaiting until the 38" mark I dropped from 8 to 6 strands. At the 47" mark, almost at the end of the bolster underneath, I dropped from 6 to 4 strands. I took the 2 dropped strands and cut them in a taper and used them as a core for plaiting my 4-plait around. After plaiting approximately to the 5' mark I slipped on a new Mike Murphy whitehide fall and tied the fall hitch. ROLL the whip to smooth it out.
